Product

A conceptual mobile application for smart lock systems that enables users to share digital keys securely with guests, such as family members or service providers.

Problem

Users felt unsafe sharing digital keys due to concerns like extended or unintended access and the lack of clear tracking of who had access and for how long.

Impact

The designed application addressed most safety concerns providing features like clear navigation, guest access management, and activity history. However a particular edge case, such as temporary guest access highlighted opportunities for further refinement.

Researching Safety in Digital Key Sharing

This school project aimed to explore how a mobile application for smart lock systems could be designed to make users feel safe when sharing digital keys. Our research question: How can the “sharing digital key” feature be designed to ensure user safety?

Team Role

I worked with three other UI/UX designers to create several key screens for the app.

Insights from User Research

Users felt unsafe sharing digital keys.

Concerns about guests having unintended long-term access.

Forgetting who had access and for how long was a major pain point.

Designing for Safety and Simplicity

Using the survey insights, we designed screens that addressed user concerns about safety

Section Break

Testing the Designs with Users

We conducted feedback sessions with the same participants from the initial survey.

Positive Feedback

Clear navigation, guest overview, and activity history effectively addressed most concerns.

Remaining Challenges

  • Some users still felt uneasy sharing keys with temporary guests (e.g., plumbers or electricians)."
  • Disabling all access" was identified as a crucial feature but needed better prominence.

Outcomes

The application was perceived as safe by most participants, though some edge cases (like temporary guest access) remained a challenge.

My Learnings

Consider Edge cases

Addressing edge cases is essential as they can significantly affect the overall experience.

Remote work

Working on this project remotely during the COVID pandemic taught me how to manage fully remote design processes confidently.
